Where Did Trolls Toys Come From?
While nowadays, the word Troll often refers to people who are mean to each other on the internet, that wasn't always the case. The origins of Trolls dates back hundreds of years into ancient folklore. Depending on the particular legend, Trolls were magical creatures which could have been good or bad in nature, but were usually friendly folk with a hint of mischief about them.
In 1959, a fisherman in Denmark, the same wonderful country which brought us LEGO, decided to share the magic of Trolls with the world. As he could not afford to buy a toy for his beloved daughter's Christmas present, Thomas Dam decided that he would make one instead. Using his fishing tools, he carved out a completely new kind of toy doll, complete with a friendly face and hair which stood tall and bright. He called it a Good Luck Troll. Suffice to say, his daughter loved her Christmas present and before long every child in the village wanted a Good Luck Troll toy of their own.
How Trolls Toys Took Over The World
It wasn't long before demand for Good Luck Troll toys exceeded Dam's ability to create them, so he set up his own toy company called Dam Things in order to supply the dolls to countries all over Europe. The Good Luck Trolls made their first appearance in America during the 60s and were an instant hit. By the 80s, they had become one of the world's most popular and instantly recognisable toys, right up there with My Little Pony, the Transformers and Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.
As popular as ever, the Trolls' first feature length movie hit cinema screens in 2016 and featured big name actors such as Anna Kendricks, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel and Russell Brand. The film proved to be a huge success, taking in well over $300 million at the world box office and spawning several sequels, cementing our spiky haired friends' place among the hearts and minds of a new generation of children.
